COMMUNICATION 101

 

In some household uncomfortable subjects were brushed under the table. In others, when conflicts arose there was a lot of yelling. In others, boundaries were crossed with oversharing. Etc. Inevitably, we have all effected by our upbringing. We know that when people learn to communicate effectively, their lives and relationships are truly transformed. These skills will help you learn to respond instead of react and will lead to respectful, healthy relationships both personally and professionally.

 

  • Reflect on the communication style learned in home environment.

  • Identify areas of improvement.

  • Identify ways power is often used in communication.

  • Identify benefits of using non-power methods.

  • Learn to respond instead of react.

  • Overview of Human Needs Theory

  • Identifying feelings and needs. communicating them 

  • Communicating needs without blame or judgment.

  • Diffusing defensiveness in order to be heard and understood.

  • How to listen and communicate you understand without agreeing.

  • How to advocate for oneself and set limits without guilt.

  • Identifying when you are and are not part of a problem.

  • How to resolve a conflict so that no one loses and problems stay solved

  • How to help others resolve their own problems.

  • How to make amends.

Relationships are infinitely complex and are greatly influenced by our upbringing, expectations and cultural norms. Having a working understanding of the forces that shape our relationships can be infinitely helpful.

When you know and operate from your values, everything becomes simpler - decisions, plans, strategies become clear because our values determine where we want to go and how to get therea working understanding of the forces that shape our relationships can be infinitely helpful. People experience a sense of well-being when their decisions align with who they are.

PHILOSOPHY

 

At THE SCHOOL OF YOU, you will have the opportunity to work with teachers, coaches, facilitators, guest speakers, mentors and professionals from a variety of fields. There will be longer courses, shorter ones, workshops, panels and presentations on specific subjects, books clubs, field trips and other events. None of the coursework will be subjected to tests or grades.

PURPOSE & PASSION 101 / MENTOR PROGRAM

 

When you know and operate from your values, everything becomes simpler - decisions, plans, strategies become clear because our values determine where we want to go and how to get therea working understanding of the forces that shape our relationships can be infinitely helpful. People experience a sense of well-being when their decisions align with who they are.

  • Success is the well-being that comes when the

  • decisions you make match who you are.​

  • Investigate and discover what purpose means to you

  • Identify needed skills 

  • Set goals

  • Use your purpose to help guide decisions

 

 

WORKING WITH A MENTOR 

You will be working with a mentor in a field related to you interest.  If appropriate or possible, your mentor might offer you an Internship or make an Introduction that can lead to one. They can offer invaluable feedback if you are working independently on a passion project. They are available to offer support, advice, make introductions and invite you to events that would be of interest. We have relationships with professional in Los Angeles in the following fields among others:
